Guilford, CT

Excellent family oriented town - 1/29/2021
I've lived here for 10 years, my husband has lived here for 20+. Beautiful New England town minutes from everything my family needs. It's also about 20 minutes from New Haven although I personally don't have much use for this city. The school system is well rated and very responsive to special needs children, they even paid for my special needs step-son's tuition at Chapel Haven, which he attended his last two years of high school. The historic town Green is beautiful especially during the holiday season. Various events are held on the Green primarily during the warm months. And NO, there are NOT bad kids hanging around the green. Never saw anything like that. The town is very family friendly with lots of fee-based sports and activities available through the Parks & Recreation. By and large the fees are modest. There are hiking trails and a lovely little shoreline beach with a kids playground called Jacob's Beach. There's a state park the next town over in Madison whose amenities include camping, biking and walking trails, and larger beaches. For family day trips there's Mystic Aquarium, Peabody Museum, Norwalk Aquarium, Connecticut Science Center, and Lake Compounce, just to name a few of the places I've taken my family. Connecticut itself is well situated for day trips to Boston, New York City, and Providence RI, again all of which I have visited with friends or family. You can either drive to these cities or take a train from New Haven. As with a lot of towns in Connecticut, you do not have city trash pick up, city water, city electricity. You pay privately for these. Most of the homes in Guilford are heated via home heating oil or propane, there are some that pay for gas via Southern Connecticut Gas. Most of the homes have their own well water, there are some that pay for water via Connecticut Water. Regarding my fellow inhabitants of Guilford, I have found my neighbors and the residents to be polite and friendly. Connecticut is an expensive state and the cost of living in Guilford reflects this. If you like small towns and wooded areas then I recommend Guilford. If you prefer larger towns or city dwelling then you may be disappointed.
