Penn Hills, PA

Penn Hills in the early 1950's... - 9/13/2020
I was born at Mercy Hospital - now U. of Pittsburgh Med. Ctr. in the 1950's. I grew up for the first 5 years in Penn Hills. It was idyllic area for a kid. We lived on a hill and my mom used to sled with us down to the cul de sac below. It was a neighborhood of kids - a fairly new development - our house was new and cost I think $7000.00 or perhaps less. I do not remember winters as being chilly but my mom bundled us warmly - four of my siblings were born in Pittsburgh, PA and we lived in a 3 bed house which became tiny with 5 kids. I have pleasant memories of picking mulberries in the woods near our house and being free to roam with neighborhood kids. I also remember a truck that used to drive by with a carousel on the back of it for kids to enjoy. It was unique to the area. I do not know about a commute - we had a Studebaker that was bought to bring me home in a reliable car. It is a fond memory. My father used it to get to the university to teach. I do not know about the commute - I think it is probably one of the most affordable areas to live near a big city for families just starting out.
