Asheville, NC

Over-rated - 11/11/2013
I just spent some time in Asheville, and thought it was just "ok", but is one of the most over-rated cities I've been too. They really work hard to promote it as a progressive city. I guess since I was coming from the pacific northwest, it just doesn't compare to the beauty and forward-thinking of the west. I was hoping to love it, due to the climate and smaller size. So I'll continue my search (west of the rockies)!

smog? - 1/26/2013
How bad is the smog in Atlanta? I'm considering a job transfer there, but I do have asthma. It couldn't be any worse than LA right?

Disappointed - 3/7/2012
Well after 5 years of living here, I find myself disappointed by the people I meet. I've lived in other states and do not have trouble making friends. At first I thought the people here were just unique or 'eccentric'. Now I see that that is just a nice word for callous and unfriendly. I keep encountering people who claim to be liberal and for human rights etc, but are so cold and undependable in how they treat their friends or acquaintances! I don't get it! They're not just cautious, but suspicious of anyone who just says hi on the street, like you must be a serial killer if you acknowledge others. I'm not just talking a few times, this is a daily/weekly occurence for me and I'm pretty friendly and 'normal'. Perhaps too normal for this town. Go ahead and "keep Portland weird", but I'm heading for the south and some southern hospitality (and sunshine wouldn't hurt either). I guess I can only conclude it must be the 9 months of darkness that keeps people in their shell.

Santa Cruz, CA

too cold? - 6/27/2011
I'm considering a move to Santa Cruz for school, but am concerned it may be too chilly of a climate for me. I like to be warm and I was surprised to see that even summer nights are 50 degrees?? Does it ever get to 80s in the summer? Thanks!

Give it 4 years..... - 6/15/2011
I'm finally moving out of pdx, end of this year. I loved it here the first 3 years. I hear this a lot from people. Then by year 4, something starts to happen...depression sets in longer, the clouds feel darker, you become more reclusive just like everyone else. Here I am 6 years later and felt like I got sucked in to a black hole. I've tried every possible therapy, medication, alternative medicine, TONS of vitamin D. Nothing can replace SUNSHINE! I think the summers have gotten shorter. Last year summer fell on July 21st, that was it. Seriously, 4 weeks of what I'd call "warm" if we're lucky. You'll love it at first and think you're in heaven, it's very beautiful. But slowwwllly the lack of light will creep up on you and you'll wake up wondering who you are.

Got clouds? - 8/18/2007
Beautiful city but you gotta love those low clouds. I've been here 11 years and am ready to move on. I loved it, and lived for those short summers at Mt Hood. But after the last 2 years of battling depression and sunlight deficiency, I've decided to leave. We've basically had no summer this year (only one sunny weekend this entire summer). I'll miss you Portland, but I'm heading for the sunshine!
