Houston, TX

Best areas to live in?????? - 9/26/2007
My husband & I are expecting our first child & we would like to relocate to a city that has much to offer. We currently live in Raleigh-Durham NC but we are bored to tears here. There are NOT enough private schools, culture, shopping, theatre, arts, etc..... thus we have been looking at Houston for a change. We are concerned about all of the crime & influx of people in need from New Orleans. Is this something that we should really be concerned about? Is there enough positive things about Houston to outweigh the bad? If so, which areas should we consider relocating to? My husband works from home & I am a housewife, so traffic is not of major concern. I welcome ALL feed back & much thanks to all of you in advance!!!

Raleigh, NC

Raleigh...BIG YAWN - 9/21/2007
This is an HONEST opinion of Raleigh. Overall this is a great place to START a family but there is not much to do. Honestly!!! There is the farmers market & a few poorly organized shin-dings at the park (maybe 100 folks). Below average trip malls abound with no shortage of Targets or Walmarts but thats it!!!
Where are all of the private schools, theatre, arts, nightlife, world class shopping, etc. Houses are not cheap here any longer & EVERY other house looks like the one before. Every one shops at the SAME furniture & clothing stores. People ARE polite BUT there is no real connection because there is nothing to do but head off to Target then grab Carolina BBQ!!!
If you are not in the medical (Duke is EVERYWHERE), research, or engineering field...forget about it. My household income is over 200K and my husband & I still can't find much to do. The wives are bored here & popping out babies left & right because WHAT else is there? This is not the place for a single woman, families with teens, Liberals, those with refined taste, or anyone who is looking for an inexpensive place to live. You must have middle or upperclass income to live well BUT you will still be bored. Unless you don't mind spending lot's of time inside a cookie cutter house.

Durham, NC

Durham is not that bad but not that great either - 9/21/2007
Durham is not as bad crime wise as most would believe BUT it is BEYOND boring & because the ghetto takes up the ENTIRE center of Durham, it is depressing to drive around in Durham. Poverty is soo blatent & in your face here because it reaches far beyond the downtown area on all sides.
On the upside, there is a lot of developement going on here but I don't think that it even smells the natives here. My husband & I moved here a year ago from the N.East & we are bored every weekend. We like most transplants are doing VERY well financially but there is not much to do with the money.
Many sub-divisions that ALL look the same. This is a good place to be a bored housewife & raise kids. NOT ENOUGH CULTURE, or focus on world class dining, shopping, & intellects.
Very boring!!!
