Raleigh is even worse than Charlotte. Yep, been there too.

Keith-you are correct except that Mackey character was/is a crook and has even to this day questionable character and lawsuits pending against him. He needed to be ran off. He wasn't qualified to be a sheriff. How he got "elected" is baffling and shows the bass-ackwards politics in Charlotte.

I agree Raleigh is a big yawn. When I used to live there all people talked about was which movie was playing and which restaurant they went to. That's it. Nothing else. All the time. I think they were all bored too.

When I lived in Atlanta (1998-2000) the single straight guys were only interested in the petite size 0 teani-inny tiny girls. In the church it was just as bad. They wouldn't give the real women the time of day.

Charlotte is a dry boring barren place for singles, unless you drink alcohol and are a sports fanatic. You can only visit the museums so many times. The churches have forgotten the singles. They have ministries for married, preschool, toddlers, college, seniors but nothing for career single adults. I have heard that CHOA and Meetup.com are good ways to get out there and have something to do. My problem is, that as of now June 2008, I can't stand the incredibly hot weather we are having and I just want to stay in the A/C on the weekends!!

Cute Town But It's Growing Fast - 11/3/2007
Once I went into the Ace Hardware Store in Waxhaw and asked the salesguy if they had any good snow shovels. He said rather curtly that it doesn't snow much in these parts and then walked away. Well, duh, I didn't ask him if it snowed in these parts, I asked him if the shovel could shovel snow. That is the typical snooty attitude towards women that I found in Waxhaw. There is much prejudice towards single women and you have to be careful. There is no reason for that prejudice but it happens. It's full of the blue-collar hick types that believe women are stupid and a few notches below them. I guess it would be a great place for married with children folks. On Saturday night at the local Food Lion the place is packed with all the long-time locals who do their shopping at the same time and it's like a reunion of sorts for everybody. They all know each other and stop to chat in the aisles. It was cute in a Mayberry type of way. I ended up moving back to Charlotte ("the city") 1/2 hour away, basically into a better neighborhood for me. But it is a cute and quaint place and if you like visiting antique stores or "taking a scenic drive in the country" you will love it.

No thank you, we'll keep our current mayor and Mayor Nagin can just stay in NOLA and he might need his school buses (maybe he'll use them this time). PS your post was funny though!

Been Here Since 2000 - 7/4/2007
A lot has changed since June 2000 when I moved here. The apartment complex where I lived at that time was paradise to me (I have since moved) but now it is turning into a run-down sewer pit. The clubhouse burned down in April 2006 and they still have not rebuilt it. Traffic has increased greatly and many people think they are Nascar-wannabes and are dangerous on the roads. The cost of living is sky-rocketing--you cannot buy a starter house for under $200K in a decent area. The only new houses builders are completing are McMansions starting at $500K plus! All the posts you see about crime is true. If you live in a McMansion neighborhood, be prepared not "if" but "when" your SUV will get broken into at 3:00am. The criminals are definetely targeting the wealthy neighborhoods at this time. A woman had her Explorer carjacked in one of the country club neighborhoods not long ago. She was delivering phonebooks at 3:00am when she was car-jacked. I don't have children in the public school system but every time I turn on the TV some CMS employee is getting arrested for pedophile or child porn behavior--a teacher, janitor, assistant coach or assistant teacher--this has been going on since 2000. School buses are always getting in wrecks and flipping over.
On the positive side the weather is good especially if you like humid hot weather and you can find pockets of friendly people. I think you can get plugged in easier if you are married with children. I believe there are a lot of single adults here in Charlotte but unfortunately the single's scene is not very good. There are literally hundreds of churches in the area and only a handful have an actual official "Singles Ministry." If you are married (with or without children) don't forget to invite single people to your parties, we like to be included too.

Pretty City, Just Not For Me - 7/1/2007
I lived in Raleigh from 1997-1998 and couldn’t wait to leave that city for Atlanta. I first moved there from the Wash DC area and it was a major cultural shock what a “Can’t-do” town it was. People will tell you anything you want to hear and then leave you hanging and not follow through. At that time I was a seasoned administrative assistant professional with good skills and experience and it was such a battle trying to find a decent paying job to make ends meet. Most of the temp jobs I worked on (to pay the bills) were awful places to work.

I also noticed a stuffy snobby “state capital” mentality with the native Raleigh people. If you and your parents and grandparents weren’t born in Raleigh and raised in Raleigh then you just aren’t a true southern (even though I was raised in Fayetteville NC). At the present time I am proud to say I am half Yankee. All people talked about were restaurants and movies and nothing else. I felt I was treated as a Leper and stigmatized by a few of the native Raleigh women because I was a 30-something single woman with no children—I didn’t have the right social status in their eyes. I did not run into very many single men (bars and nightclubs are not my thing) but my impression of the few single men I did run into played games and jerked me around like I was supposed to be some desperate woman.

Atlanta may be more crowded and frantic but it didn’t take me long to find a decent job and it sure was easier to make friends and establish an extended family there.
