Medicine Park, OK

A Wonderful Place to Visit! - 7/10/2011
There is a charm to this little cobblestone community that makes it a place well worth your time. Located in the Wichita Mountains in Southwest Oklahoma, this small town was created for the tourist in mind, although more and more are opting to live here, as evident in the new housing developments.
Medicine Park has a rich history full of interesting people like outlaws (Jesse James) and movie stars (Dale Evans and Roy Rogers honeymooned here). It is also home to artists, musicians, and an eclectic mix people who prefer quiet living amongst the mountains and trees.
This tiny town is relatively quiet during the weekdays, although a handful of shops stay open all through the week. The Old Plantation stays open daily and they serve a wonderful steak. Other restaurants are open usually from Wednesday on through Sunday. The Buffalo Bistro, Las Montanas, and The Riverside Cafe all serve good food. Other places to have a treat are Medicine Park Ice Cream and Candy Company, which serves handmade ice cream and fudge, and Mrs. Chadwick's Bakery and Coffee Bar, the only bakery in town that serves a sweet breakfast and gourmet coffees.
Shopping is also a fun part of Medicine Park. "Cobblestone Row" has an interesting mix of shops with a variety of items for sale. Starting with The Rusty Buffalo and working through LulaBelle's, The Laughing Lizard, Cobblestone Doghouse, The White Buffalo and Grease Monkeys, there's something for everyone. The Branded Bear is another store that sells Native American jewelry. Across from Cobblestone Row is the old jail that is home to "HippieChicks and Cowgirls," a shop that will delight the ladies, young and old.
Fishing is a big part of Medicine Park's activities and "Gone Fishing" is the place to visit for tackle gear and a fishing license.
Many motorcycle clubs travel to Medicine Park for the wonderful views and to meet up at the local motorcycle shop "Chaps My Ass." The Park Tavern host cyclists with their live outdoor music. Bicyclists love to travel through the Wichita Wildlife Refuge to come to Medicine Park for a stop along the way.
Art is another item available to visitors at the Cobblestone Galleries. The town even has a blacksmith as well as a liquor store.
People come to swim in Bath Lake and stay in the beautiful lodges and hotels. Most weekends host weddings in the Music Hall.
Medicine Park is worth the trip and staying a weekend to enjoy a small town in Oklahoma is a treat.
