Small Town Without the Charm -
11/3/2022I grew up in Winchester and I can't recommend moving there. If you plan on raising a family there, your children will be at a disadvantage attending schools in the area. They are terrible. Franklin County High School scores a 4.2 out of 100 on the College Readiness Index, based on proficiency in basic subjects of math, reading and science.
As an adult, there is nowhere to work. If you don't already have a job secured at Nissan, Arnold Air Force Base, or Jack Daniel's, you can't expect to find many good jobs there. If you don't have an education, there are low-paying service jobs that you can compete with recent high school graduates for, or farm work.
There is really nothing to do here. Unless you have cultivated your own hobbies that you can happily engage in at home, you'll find very little here outside of the home for entertainment. Outdoor activities are big here, and I will say that is one upside to the area. There are multiple lakes for boating and fishing, and a state park for hiking and nature enthusiasts. But they aren't any better than natural areas found just outside of more prosperous and interesting towns.
The city also has a high crime rate for a town of its size - I live in Orlando at the moment, and the violent crime rate here is only a little higher than in Winchester. The city also has a notorious meth problem.
If you are looking for a charming Tennessee small town to live in? Don't pick this one.
