Chico, CA

90s Visit - 8/18/2008
I visited Chico once in the early 90s for a lenghty stay with my mother's childhood friend and family. The town was very VERY HOT and it seemed a bit humid. Lots of college students, but also lots of hicks and rednecks. The last poster on this forum is not serious or he is misinformed when he says Chico is too liberal. Chico is VERY conservative for a college town and the stats in the Sterling profile support it--just read them. Registered republicans far outnumber registered democrats. Even here in the conservative Midwest of Columbus, Ohio where I live, dems far outnumber repubs in my county. Politics aside, Chico did seem like an OK place back when I visited in the 90s, but it probably is a lot worse now, and not worth the outrageous housing costs to live there.

Davenport, IA

As one who is originally from upstate New York, the comments made about New York being more narrow minded and unworldly than Iowa is laughable. Upstate New York may have its problems, but it is is certainly more open, culturally diversed, and sophisticated than Iowa. Let's be real. Although I live in Wisconsin, I have visited Davenport and C.R. very often. Both cities are O.K but Cedar Rapids is very country. Some people still park their trucks and boats on their front lawn. Davenport has a great river front and quaint historic area. As in much of Iowa, the cost of living is superb. The town also has a liitle bit more of an "eastern industrial feel", being close to Illinois and all. However, some of the rural mentality still exists, and frankly there is not much to do in Davenport. My personal favorite town in Iowa is Iowa City hands-down. This college town has more culture and a "clean-cut feel" than the rest of Iowa.

Conway, AR

Conway is the Best - 1/15/2008
I have live in quite a few places--California, Boise, Idaho, Honolulu, Minnesota, and presently Madison, Wisconsin. By far, I believe that Conway was the best place I ever lived. My experience in the city was nothing short of excellent. As a Californian, and African-American professional, I heard a lot of negative things from my parents who grew up in Arkansas. However, when attended Univ of Central Arkansas in 2001,I found the community to be extremely friendly from people at school, shopkeepers, my neighbors in my apartment complex, etc. The west end of Conway, where I lived, has beautiful and modern brick homes. People are more clean cut in Conway, versus the folks here in the midwest who have the nerve to joke about Arkansas. One thing I enjoyed about Conway was the low cost of living. As one poster mentioned, Conway Corporation is an excellent low cost city owned utilty provider. The biggest drawback of Conway was that jobs outside of the university, which is a major employer, are hard to come by in Conway. However, the city would be a great place to retire or own a small business.
