El Cajon, CA | 3 Review(s)

I am an undergraduate student at San Diego State University, majoring in Spanish with a minor in Sociology. I would like to be a judge one day, so when I finish up at SDSU, I plan on applying to UCLA law school. I enjoy intellectual conversation as much as rigorous outdoor activity. On my weekends, I like to surf and hike.

Racism is Alive! - 8/17/2009
Maybe I'm naive, but I was shocked to see the level of racism I saw while on vacation in Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. I am a Spanish major and went to Little Havana for the cultural experience. People were looking at me as if I were Fidel himself. At a gas station, a white guy next to me just started calling black people "n******". Give me a break! Be strong, break the status quo, and see people for their personalities, not their skin hues!! Over here, on the West Coast, we've managed to progress beyond this ignorance.

Amen to that! I have lived here my whole life and as soon as I am financially able to rent that U-HAUL, I'm packing my stuff up and getting the HELL OUT OF HERE! Of course, being conservative, my parents and grandparents, with their decent houses, can't understand my dislike for SD. Well, the day after graduation, I'm driving that U-HAUL 80 MPH North on I-5 and will not looking back.

The San Diego Deception - 8/17/2009
I am twenty-one years old and was born and raised in San Diego. I had a very memorable childhood here-from spending numerous summer days at the beach to actually being able to play baseball outside during the sunny, temperate winter days. Now that I am older and able to consciously evaluate my surroundings, the lure of the city has dissipated.
To do justice to the city, it does have extremely comfortable weather, as winter highs range from the upper fifities to low seventies and summer highs linger in the upper seventies to low eighties along the coast. As a result of the beautiful weather, people with the economical means from all over the world, let alone the country, have migrated to San Diego and such demand for housing synthesized with large economic disposal has, in time, squeezed the San Diego's middle class to Phoenix, Arizona. What remains is a highly stratified city-people either have money or they don't.
Stemming from the economical situation of San Diego is a rife support of the Republican party. Physically speaking, San Diego is in California; ideologically speaking, it belongs in Texas, if not the nation's heartland. San Diego's conservative leanings arise from the plethora of wealthy inhabitants along with a strong military presence(I always wondered why the military had such conservative leanings. Is it not the democrats [many of whom are doves] that use war only as a last strategy and extend numerous additional benefits to veterans that Republicans always seem to fall short on?) San Diego is deemed a "gay friendly" city. Well, I am a homosexual and let me say that this is a blatant lie. Unless a gay individual remains in a three mile radius of an area called "Hillcrest" or at the two public universities of San Diego, good luck finding support for the cause. San Diegans are superficial when it comes to this issue-many will say they support the plight of the gay community, yet the county voted for Prop 8 (the stance that upholds discrimination) by a 55% to 45% margin. This is because there is an extremely strong religious presence here-unlike any other in Coastal California-that (falsely) believe the language of the Bible takes precedent over common sense when dealing with political issues.
The last thing that you must know about is San Diego is its position toward its diverse community. First off, let me say that San Diego does deserve some credit on the basis that racism is not prevalent here. All races, to an extent, seem to get along. However, as of late, I feel comfortable saying that the majority of non-color people in San Diego take issue with the extremely large Latino presence in San Diego. San Diego is some twenty miles north of Tijuana, Baja California Norte, Mexico. As a result, many Mexicans, both legally and illegally, come to San Diego to seek work and the decent wage that accompany. If the majority of San Diego whites had their way, I believe they would round up anyone of bronze-colored skin and ship them off the Mexico. Well, good luck having a functioning city if this wish were to come true. San Diego has always been and will always be tied to its Latino presence. It would be nice if more people would look at the positive implications that these individuals have on our local economy, rather that relying on false predispositions that they are lazy and "milk" our system.
Overall, I understand why people want to come here, I mean the city does have a lot to offer. But to my gay and/or liberal friends (You know, people that actually believe in human rights), I strongly recommend you research other prospects, like Los Angeles or the San Francisco Bay Area. Sure they have their problems too, but at least your dignity won't be compromised through the ignorant views of locals that view liberalism as "nonsense planted by liberal professors."
I am set to finish up my undergraduate work at San Diego State in two years. I don't plan on leaving the day after graduation, I plan on FLEEING (I would have done so a long time ago had it have been financially plausible).
