Hendersonville, NC | 1 Review(s)

Lived many places in the US until husband was transferred to Phoenix area and changed professions. He worked for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office for 20 years until retiring. Our children still live in the Phoenix metro area. I had the luxury of being a stay at home mom and waited to get my nursing degree until becoming an empty nester. We originally moved to Phoenix from Portland, Or on the advise of our doctor because of allergy and respiratory problems. When we first moved there the climate improved the health issues tremendously but in the course of 22 years the air quality degraded so badly that it became a major contributor to health and respiratory problems.

Sun City, AZ

Consider carefully before you make the move . . . - 2/5/2009
My husband worked for the Sheriff's Office and we lived in the metro Phoenix area for 18 years prior to moving to Sun City after our children moved out. We lived in Sun City for 3 years prior to reconsidering our options. Housing was very affordable and there were some great ammenities with all the recreation available. Frustration ensued when we discovered that they had rules for everything and the majority of people in the 55+ age group didn't want anything to be changed, ever! Also, if you are used to living in a community where they drive 25 mph you will be right at home here trying to maneuver between golf carts. Street traffic in the metro Phoenix area, outside of Sun City, moves at lightening speed and freeway traffic even faster. They now have photo radar on the majority of surface streets and all freeways. If you can't keep up drivers will run you down and be verbally abusive in the process. Air quality is some of the worst in the nation, so if you have any allergies or respiratory problems consider living somewhere else. Dry heat, yes, but so is a convection oven. Honestly, there is such a thing as too much sunshine. We made a heart wrenching decision to find a place with cleaner air, higher level of safety, respectful neighbors, and a slower pace of life and although we miss our family dearly we couldn't be happier than in the Johnson City, TN/ Asheville, NC area.
