2/22/2021I too am from PA originally although I moved to Aiken from Belen, NM in 1995. I certainly don't agree with much of this biased critique although I know that life in "the Valley" is fraught with what used to be called PWTs although that would be very impolite these days where everyone is offended by almost everything. I am retired from the court system in SC where I worked in 42 of the 46 counties, plus I rode my motorcycle 86K miles in 3 years, mostly within the borders of the state so I have a pretty good grasp of the state. I love Aiken. Southern women by and large aren't the friendliest in the world unless you are a man with sizeable portfolio, but they are very polite. Not too many people in Aiken are actually FROM Aiken thanks to SRS, but about Aiken from my perspective. It's a small town but very liveable and enjoyable. Yes, it is hot and buggy in the summertime. Deal with it or stay indoors from mid afternoon until past sundown. Great town to walk with well-lit sidewalks, horse district has dirt streets which will be mudded in rainy seasons, a great library, several city parks including Hopeland Gardens which has a Christmas display and summer concert series, golf courses are plentiful and varied from the inexpensive to the high-dollar Palmetto. There's all the disciplines of horsemanship and the town certainly caters to horse people. Downtown is busy all the time and cities across the US regularly send delegations here to observe and learn why it is so bustling all the time. There are many festivals throughout the year. Lots of people just go down to The Alley for drinks and sitting, rocking and people watching. I have glossed over much but I am appalled that anyone could callously say there are only two types of people that live here, rich or boring retired folks. Well, bless her heart. She should know that the same roads that brought her here can take her right back to PA.
