re: The best place to live
-
7/7/2020I think if you are born and raised in the Willamette Valley you're used to 7 months of rain and gloom. I have lived all across the US. I was born in NH, lived on the east coast, lived in the midwest and landed in Nevada before moving to Salem. I live in Nevada for 20 years. I really, really miss the sun. I also do not enjoy constant rain for months on end. This year, 2020, summer has gotten off to a very slow start. It is now July and I'm still wearing warm clothing. I long for warm, sunny days. I have developed SAD. Before I moved here I had friends and family say "it rains a lot there". There is no way to understand that statement until you experience it. Salem is a wonderful hub; there are so many places around Salem to go see and do. I just wish I could enjoy them more with sun. 3/4 of the year is rain and it's a shame. But, everyone is different. I will not retire here.

re: Pueblo Crime Rate -
2/26/2018This is such a bummer to read because I'm hearing this is now happening everywhere. Crime is out of control and so are the homeless....no place is safe anymore!

re: No Thank You -
2/26/2018I totally agree and will be moving ASAP! It's as if it's stuck and can't move forward. Old housing, lots of institutions, high homeless rate that brings high crime. Yes, there is a ton of stuff to do not too far away but to live here, you REALLY have to like muddy, soggy, wet, mildrew days 6 months out of the year. YUCK!

2/26/2018but in the meantime...HIGH crime and a "poor" downtown and surrounding areas. Not much money being put into Salem.

re: The crime is a shame and homeless is over the -
2/26/2018The homeless crisis is horrible and with it comes high crime. Porch pirates, homeless breaking into cars, stealing cars, breaking into homes....you see the homeless everywhere. I moved here less than 2 years ago from Las Vegas and I'm in shock. Salem "feels" poor. Old, old housing, narrow streets, poor lighting...basements that flood from all the rain, moss and mildew....I'll be moving as soon as possible.

re: Weather -
2/26/2018some rain???? how about 6 months of rain!!! The ground stays wet, muddy and soggy for the entire winter. And there are several cloudy, grey days that get down-right depressing. There's nothing worse than being cold and WET!!! This climate is ruining my horse's feet because he's standing in mud at least 6 months out of the year. My 2nd option would be to stick him in an indoor stall all winter but that's just cruel. Nope, not much snow but I guess I'd prefer sunny, dry and cold winter's to Salem's winters. I'm hoping to move over the Santiam Pass to central Oregon where it has my kind of climate....drier and sunnier!
