Spartanburg, SC

One Word = "YUCK"

yucky everything. lock your car doors anywhere you go. don't mind the trash on the side of the road. Orange-jacketed convicts will soon be picking it up.

Like the name implies, "COUNTRY"
- 6/7/2007
Look at this site's data on cost of living. 24% less than national average. You can't beat that. Often, a low cost of living will be associated with a high crime rate. Not here. Crime rate is only a "3". Now, the down side....trash on side of highway, you might find a nicer brick ranch, but on your way home you pass about 5 cruddy little trailers, with lots of junk in their front yard. There are a lot of hill-billy's here, but overall they seem pleasant. I've lived here for a little over a year and plan to move. It will be bittersweet. The weather, nice. The cost of living and crime rate, very nice. The scummy 1980 Monte Carlo pouring smoke out of it's exhaust in front of me on my way home, ....not so nice. The lack of restaurant's, unless you like a pound of grease with each meal, not so nice.

Dreadful
- 6/7/2007
If you're looking for a very nice climate and a low cost of living, which Spartanburg offers, you have to sacrifice other things. There are some growing areas north and the west of the city that aren't as depressing to live in. Restaurant-wise, you'll find a lot of greasy fast food chains. However, Olive Garden and Hooters recently opened right next to the Golden Corral and the mall. I think all of these restaurants first appeared in the 1980's throughout the rest of the country. The amount of litter along the roads is very prevelent, but not only isolated to Spartanburg, throughout much of the state. The Spartanburg "claim-to-fame" restaurant is called The Beacon. Locals will tell you that people from all over the world come to eat there. The Beacon is just another greasy spoon known for their wait staff's rude behavior. Everything's topped with chili and cheese. Why would people from all over the world want such a thing? And the area that it's located...just don't go around that part of town after the sun goes down. Although it's warm and the sun shines a lot, it always feels like a rainy day when you're in Spartanburg, SC.

Grand Rapids, MI

BEAUTIFUL CITY
- 6/7/2007
Does the one reviewer have Grand Rapids confused with Antarctica? It is definitely not "dark all but a few days in summer". The fact that it goes from winter right into summer is fairly true. I lived in Grand Rapids for around 7 years and enjoyed my stay very much. There's plenty to do for a city of this size. Museums, minor-league baseball, hockey, soccer, arena football, etc. The conservativeness is appealing to many that wish to raise a family. It still offers many cultural events, concerts, etc. Some of the older neighborhoods have gorgeous brick homes. The traffic is very tolerable.
It's a half an hour from the beautiful sandy beaches of Lake Michigan. The people are VERY friendly. It boasts some incredible hospitals. All-in-all, a BEAUTIFUL city.
