Wheeling after many years away -
8/14/2012My wife and I grew up in Wheeling and left in our early 20's but have come back after 40 years. Having lived from Bangor, ME to Ft. Lauderdale, Fl we found there is no perfect place to live. Wheeling for its size has many activities going on all of the time. Music festivals, music in the parks (two of the finest parks in the country), golf courses, unbelievable shopping at the Highlands including Cabelas and many restuarants and the Ohio Valley Mall. Colleges and Universities, great hospitals and some of the least expensive housing in the country. Climate is not too bad and winters are fairly mild with little snow. Unbelievable architecture and many historic homes. If the crime rate seems a little high dont take it too serious, as a former cop I can tell you it is mostly a certain group preying on their own. Need I say more... A great place for retiring babyboomers and I am surprised they have not discovered it yet.

re: Where tie-dye and coveralls live in harmony - -
7/27/2012Floyd is a interesting mix for sure but in my opinion having lived in Floyd County and operated a B&B there it is very clickish. The locals are a pretty tight knit bunch and the artisan crowd being the same. Very clean air and water and extremely safe crime wise. Fond memories but as elsewhere no place is perfect and major shopping is 35-60 miles away in Christiansburg or Roanoke.

Great Small Town in Central FLA -
6/15/2012Have lived in Dunnellon off and on for the past 12 years having owned several homes there my wife and I think Dunnellon is a great little small town with good decent people living there.
That being said summers are hot and humid, this is Florida. Winters are great, sometimes frosty mornings, 278 sunny days a year. Traffic for the most part is not bad but once in a while the main drag is busy. Rainbow Springs is a gift from God, crystal clear, 72 degrees year around, almost like a fountain of youth. Rejuvenating affect.
Housing prices at this time are a bargain compared to a few years ago.
Real estate taxes I feel are high in the entire state but no state income tax.
Older residents, not a lot of job opportunities for younger people.
Do not understand why the crime rates seem high. As a former cop I feel extremely safe anywhere in Dunnellon. I guess with a small population a few criminal acts make it seem much worse than it is.
Having lived all over Florida including Venice, Ft. Lauderdale and Ft. Walton Beach to me Dunnellon would be my choice. Ocala and the National Forest are also close by as is Gainesville and the University.

Papermill Stench -
2/7/2010Georgetown like many nice towns are ruined by the foul smell of these mills that not only polute the air but the water as well. Why there are not controls put on them is beyond me. Amelia Island, Florida is another example of a beautiful place compromised by corporate paper mill greed. Why should the citizens be exposed to this?
