Colton, OR

Beautiful but petty - 9/21/2021
I have lived here since 1962. It's a rural, unincorporated community of mostly small farms and large lots, between 500 and 5 acres. My area is zone to prevent any subdivisions over 80 acres. It's tall timber country, with farms and Christmas trees. It is a bit a elitist now that the average place sells for over $600,000. But those of us still here from the old days remember when land was cheap. My grandparents bought my forty acres for about $5,000 after the war and my folks built the house for $11,000. The community is conservative and historically generally racist when I was a girl and that hasn't changed much. Generally people here think they are entitled to whatever they want and are opposed to government even it it saves lives. They are pretty confident nothing really bad can happen to them here inspite of near misses on fires. A few were not so lucky.
I gave this community a four star rating because it is beautiful! Even though this year's drought hit hard, it's still one of the pretties places in the state. Schools use to be great when my family attended. But only a few go on to higher education, many believe mother nature owes them a living because their great, great grandfather came here a hundred years ago to cut the big trees and then instead of going back to Sweden or Norway, he stayed here. No one ever ask what was wrong with Sweden.
Generally speaking though the community has been a live and let live community. Now there is an infestation of weird fascist who don't believe in freedom and just want everyone to be just like them, conservative, religious fanatics and racist. They fly the US flag in place of the confederate flag they really prefer. That said these people are vocal but the most radical remain a minority. Not everyone here is like this. Many are wonderful open, loving and accepting.
What is cool about Colton is you can hike for miles right out your backdoor. It's only an hour to great skiing and about an hour and a half to the coast. The Clackamas and Molalla river are right here for kayaking and tubing. The steelhead fishing is the best! Big sky's and big mountains and cinder buttes abound. The weather is mild, about ten degrees cooler than Portland in the summer and 10-20 degrees colder in the winter.
Apple and pear trees grow wild, and our old growth firs are numerous!
If you can avoid the weirdos, and don't mind guns going off all times of the day or night, then this is for you. It is per
