Petal, MS

Petal native - 11/13/2023
I am a Petal native 4th generation with a child (5th generation) in the Petal School District. I love it here, but I must say that a lot of the information provided on this website about this city is just flat out wrong. For starters, local restaurants in petal do not include the Purple Parrot. That place was in Hattiesburg until it shut down in recent years. If you'd like a recommendation on local eateries here I recommend going to Mom & Dads Country Buffet, Sully's on the Evelyn Gandy Parkway, El Mariachi Loco on Central avenue, to name a few. The parks in Petal are wonderful, but the ones listed here are not actually located in the city of Petal. Here are some that are, though: Willie Hinton Park located on Main Street offers a huge walking trail, biking trail, pavilion, soccer fields, playground and it is in close proximity to the library and police department so great for safety reasons. The YMCA is located on Hillcrest loop and across from it you will find our skate park, a splash pad in the works and soon to be open, along with another playground and some baseball fields and a walking trail. There are more parks than this but I will move on to another topic now. As far as the river goes - we are located along the Leaf River and we have a river park that is great for mountain biking and other things like that - the name of this park is the Petal River Park - not to be confused with Chain park which is actually located across the city limits line in a placed called Hattiesburg. We are not Hattiesburg - we are Petal. Also in Petal you will find the top rated school district in the state of mississippi. We have over 4,000 students enrolled in our public schools and it is highly sought after in terms of reasons why people move to our area. We also have a dyslexia school that is named the 3D school and this is a private school that is specifically for students with dyslexia. It is highly accredited and again, among the best in the state if not THE best in the state. We also are home to several landmarks, including the Carter Cabin which is the oldest structure in town and was built in 1846 and still has the original items inside of it from that time period - it is a historic landmark in our city. We also are home to an airplane that was once used as the IBM corporate plane and a rocket that was used to take the first satellite into outterspace. The housing market here is booming right now - and houses are higher than they used to be, but it is worth it. If you want to live outside of the corporate limits there are plenty of places to go do that - including subdivisions like Long leaf acres and Stonebrooke which offer a wonderful outdoors atmosphere, featuring a lake for fishing and long leaf pine trees adorned on each lot which are all much larger than traditional lots of land for housing. You will also find here a salt dome that is home to the first underground storage facility for natural gas - the Petal Gas Storage in located on Highway 11 alongside about 6-7 other major players in the field of oil and gas: Enterprise Products, Targa, Gulf South Pipeline, Boardwalk Pipeline Partners, Ergon, to name a few. Job opportunities in the city itself are scarce but a short distance away is Hattiesburg and that is where you will find the majority of corporate jobs.
