Cold, greedy, heartless selfish people?
- 3/4/2006
Is it just the people I have known all my life or is it the area? I was in this area of the country all my youth, and the people are true grit country types: suspicious of others--especially Yankees--because, after all, we are still fighting the Civil War down there; cold and heartless; greedy and grasping. The land is pretty and green, but the ambiance ain't there kids. I feel sorry for anyone raised there cause their view of humanity is surely twisted.

If you like fake, plastic, backstabbing, "pretend"
- 3/4/2006
Over 20 years ago, I had a really great job offer in Dallas. I moved from Chicago to Houston instead. Why? A church on every other corner told me I would be surrounded by fake religiousness. Was I right? You bet I was. Dallasites are plastic, two-faced (read others comments on the smiling in your face/stabbing you in the back people there), Yankee hating people (and we are talking 2 pieced pinstriped suit guys and not just the rednecks). After all, the clothing Merchandise Mart is in Dallas, they are $8 an hour employees there wearing their Gucci--and, believe it or not, they actually believe they are somebody! Jobwise, Dallas might have been better but at white price? Go to Fort Worth instead and live if you have to be in this part of the State. Cowboys are more honest than these phonies in Dallas. I have personal experience with the acting like they are your friend and aren't really.
I got stuck in hot, sweaty, unfriendly Houston--but, at least, this blue collar town has a little more honesty than Dallas.

Houston's crime rate has flown up: Tommy's right!
- 3/3/2006
In the first three months of the Katrina visitors moving to Houston, there were more murders alone than in the entire whole year before. Nuff said. Louisianna must be just jumping for joy to send all their riffraff to Texas/Houston. But, isn't that the way this country was settled in the beginning with England sending us her crapola

QuadCities Pros and Cons
- 3/3/2006
I grew up here, and have just come back after forty years. I am moving to another State after my family obligations are over, but, I have to say, the people here are shockingly kind and nice. A real small town feel, but over 400K people in all. Four seasons is nice. Housing is super cheap. It is heartbreaking that so much manufacturing has left this area. The people here are actually naive and the kind you expect to find in a church on Sunday. Not my cup of tea for close friends as they are almost goody goody, but they ARE definitely some of the nicest people in America. If I got stuck here forever, I could tolerate it. Prices all over this area are dirt cheap. The area has definitely gone down since the manufacturing has left, but the gambling boats are helping bring some action here. And they do bring many national acts here for entertainment which you can see for about half or less than you would see the same act in one of the major cities. There are plusses here. And, if you get really bored, drive to Chicago as it is only three hours away.

Texans still hate Yankees
- 3/2/2006
Left after 23 long years. Not sure I would ever come back. Two things: Texans smile in your face and stab you in the back alot; and Texans were so damned mean to all the Yankees--1982-97 or so--like we caused the oil crash! They can be ignorant and mean, so watch your back Yankees.
The heat got to me. The people, in general, are alot more honest than other areas like Chicago where they are totally out for themself. And the men like their women with big hair, big boobs and no brains. You will find out this isn't a joke eventually for yourself.
Houston pretty much sucks. Too big to have any community feel at all.
Property taxes are sky high, so even if the house costs little, you will be paying big, big bucks in property taxes.

Pros and Cons of Living in Houston
- 3/2/2006
I moved from Chicago 23 years ago--right after the oil crash. The hostility, anger, rudeness and just plain cruelty of the Houstonians towards us Yankees left a bitter taste in my mouth for all those years. They were unbelievably mean. Regardless, lived in Bellaire which I LOVED. It is too expensive now for most, I think. Found most there honest--compared to the people in Chicago which has to be the most dog eat dog city in America.
Cost of housing is cheap, not the job opportunities like in Chicago, not much artistic culture. Would I consider going back to that awful heat now? Mixed emotions. Can tolerate the heat, BUT the meanness of the Texans got awfully old and tiring. They smile in your face and stab you in the back at the same time. Prefer the honesty of the Chicagoans, but, on the other hand, feel you will be treated fairer by far by the Houstonians. One other thing, the property tax rate is too much in Houston! Cheap housing and high taxes at 8.25% sales tax and such high, high property taxes. Like I said, I wouldn't rule out going back...but with the new high crime rate since Katrina, well...I would be very careful where I lived. All in all, I think what bothered me the most was the lack of opportunity brought on by the 15 years Houston stood at a standstill (about 1982 until 1997 or so) economically. Things have improved there, I am sure, opportunity-wise.
