Glens Falls, NYSafe and courteous
Glens Falls is a very courteous small city. I read somewhere it is the safest city for its size in U.S.
Real estate very cheap ( nice 4 bedroom house for under $325k), but being in NYS property and income taxes high.
Economy slowed with Great Recession and local paper companies have not really recover. Global Foundaries in Wilton just to the south though doing a lot of hiring so job prospects improving.
Biggest asset is its being the gateway to the Adirondack Mountains. Get north of touristy Lake George village and you will find some great small towns and 6 million acres of hiking, skiing and boating adventures. Be sure to check out historic North Creek, home to White water rafting, Gore Mt Ski Center, and performing arts at Tannery Pond Community Center.
Santa Fe, NMGreat, but not perfect
Bought a house here in 2013 and split my time here with other house in Adirondack Mountains of NYS. Santa Fe is great, but not perfect.
Love the climate. 306 days of great sunshine and deep blue skies. Summers rarely hit 90F. Low humidity here in the high desert so no sleepless nights as nighttime temps back down to 60F to 70F even in the heat of summer. City at 7,000’ elevation gets about 20” snow a year, but a Ski Santa Fe on mountain with 12,000’ elevation, gets over 240”.
Great arts and culture. 3rd biggest art market in US. Many free events and festivals.
People very friendly for a small city that can be over run with tourists.
Within 3 miles of the historic Plaza restaurants and real estate pricy, but go further out and prices much lower. Many working families opt for just south of the city or in the town of Eldorado.
Biggest negative is the beaucracy here. You would think the Colonial Spanish never left. Single task at DMV can take 3 hours. Local Social Security Office a disaster.
Glens Falls, NYCity Revival
Glens Falls was featured as "Hometown USA" in Life magazine in the 40's, but for years afterward slowly died. In the past 5 years, however, city seems to be in a revival: new state-of-the-art additional to Crandall Library, a summer theatre program at "the Wood", new traffic engineering. Lots of new bistros on Glen St (be sure to check out "Rauls" and the "Chocolate Mill". Great outdoor opportunities in the "forever wild" Adirondack Park just to the north. City located north of culture and summer fun of Srataog and Lake George to the north. Real estate taxes in the city high; if moving to town check out areas around the city: Queensbury, Hudson Falls, Fort Edward.
Glens Falls, NYTown in revival
Glens Falls was featured as "Hometown, USA" in Life Magazine years ago, but then followed years of decline. City now going through a revival with re-energized downtown (new traffic patterns, new restaurants, micro-brews). Major expansions of Library, Hospital and C.R. Wood Theatre completed. Very safe city, but taxes within city limits high as they are in all of NYS.Taxes much lower in neighboring Queensbury and small rural hamlets in region. Great life-style at the foot of the Adirondack Park (6 million acres of private and public "Forever Wild" lands). Minutes from resort towns of Saratoga to the south and Lake George to the north. Lots of ski areas in the region, too. Cold, snowy winters and August can be hot with high humidity. Only 3.5 hrs to cultural attractions in Montreal, Boston or NYC. Have lived in area since 1964 and have always found local people very friendly and helpful.
