re: Keep Portland Weird but Beautiful!

4/7/2019Let's deconstruct this with some cold hard facts. Portland's rivers used to be toxic superfund sites. They are cleaner now than they were in past decades. Look it up. I work between CA and OR. Gas is .50-.75 cheaper here per gallon in Portland. I can confirm this having just purchased gas in both states last week, and every week for the past two years. Housing costs are astronomical in every major city right now - it is still way cheaper in Portland than almost any other west coast city, and definitely lower than any comparable CA city, unless you were comparing Portland to Stockton, for instance, or Fresno? Seattle, DC, Hawaii and CA are more expensive. LOL. Homelessness is a trending problem nationwide in all major cities right now, from LA to Minneapolis. It's a national issue, it's not unique to Portland. It's amazing how much worse it is in other cities. Portland will not become the next SF because the economy here is far weaker. SF had a robust economy and huge brain trust BEFORE the tech explosion. Drivers here are so passive - they will stop for a pedestrian waiting to jaywalk. Go drive on the east coast or southern CA if you want to experience aggressive driving. Every city in America is experiencing a squeeze right now, in population growth and rent and freeway congestion. It's the strain of population growth and it's not unique to Portland. Portland just loves to revel in its quaint misery.
