Orlando, FL

ALL of Orlando is full of crime!
- 12/25/2006
I see many arguements as to which neighborhoods are worst and comparisons to one zip code to another. WHO CARES!! Orlando as a whole is in real trouble there have been almost 60 (by the time anyone reads this maybe over 60) murders this year in Orlando. Its insane how people in this city disregard human life. And drugs are everywhere no neighborhood is safe. Stop pointing fingers, if you want to make a difference here join a neighborhood watch. But see this is where the problem comes in...NO ONE wants to even talk to their neighbors here let alone join a watch with them. This is how crime becomes rampant in cities. The people here have this nasty attitude towards each other. If you say hello they either roll their eyes or ignore you, hold a door for even an old lady..she won't say thank you. If there is an accident on I-4 no one will stop to help they would rather stare and hold up traffic. There are homeless people everywhere in the downtown and people just pass them by like human garbage. The city wants to stop NON-PROFIT organizations from even feeding them. How sad a place do I live in that the homeless are expected to starve or figure something out on their own!! Most of these people are older & even mentally ill people that just can't take care of themselves. I have lived here for 3 years and it gets worse each year. People will not change here and that means things will NEVER get better, only worse. I plan to leave here in the spring. I suggest that anyone who reads this that has thought about moving here will think twice. It is a cruel, unwelcoming, dirty, crime filled city and for anyone who is used to a hello or a smile...look elsewhere.

Ocean City, MD

Expensive!!
- 11/19/2006
Ocean City is indeed as bad as Virginia Beach in terms of expensive housing. Almost everything here has gone condo, all the little summer cottages that lined the coast at one time are nearly extinct. They have been replaced by hulking, garishly "tropical" painted condos that start out around $400k.And that is usually a one bedroom one bathroom. There really is no charm here no sense of community since everyone usually rents out their property weekly in the summer and the same people aren't in condos from week to week. The place is practically a ghost town in the winter (but with temps in the 20s and the wind whipping in off the Atlantic its no mystery why). The city's town council tries to sell it as a tropical paradise with quaint shops and beautiful beaches. What they mean is full of tacky T-shirt vendors that sell junk like beer bongs and thongs and water pipes, not to mention tons of liquor stores. And step over the drunk passed out college kids that litter the "beautiful" beaches come May and June (they are affectionately called "Junebugs" by the few locals that live here). They hide the fact that burglary and robberies goes up steadily each year because of the party atmosphere influenced by college/high school kids from out of state. And violent crimes have gone up as well. There was a case of a 14 yr old girl being raped by three college aged guys that were visiting O.C from Pennsylvania. And a double murder happened a few years back in one of the condos. It was on Court TV, you can look it up on the internet. To sum it up overpriced, no family town and be mindful of your personal safety in the summer months.

Altamonte Springs, FL

Too little for Too much.
- 11/19/2006
I have lived in Altamonte Springs for almost 2 years. The rent here is ridiculous thanks to most of the area going condo. I moved into what I thought would be a quiet, peaceful, somewhat stress free apartment complex. WRONG!! I pay $890 per month and that is with a "discount" that is offered for signing a year lease. The neighbors are loud and don't follow any of the rules set, (like grilling on a balcony underneath my own balcony). Loud booming car stereos at 2 in the morning. I found drug paraphernalia on the ground just 3 weeks ago. The downstairs neighbors don't speak English, and have 1 woman, at least 3 men and 3 small children living in a two bedroom apt. They leave their door open alot and you can see childrens bunk beds and a toddler bed in the living room. From what I have heard about the Orlando/Altamonte Springs area this is common practice. I live on Wymore Rd in Altamonte and its a strange sight to see because one side of the road is apartment complexes that you can tell aren't in the best of conditions (mine was the nicest here judging the outside appearance), the other side is gated housing communities with walls so high you can only see the roofs of houses inside. I tried to find other apartments in Altamonte Springs that were not in this area but found that it is more expensive to live elsewhere. I plan to move out of state in July when my lease is finished. I lived in Orlando for a year and Altamonte Springs is quieter, but I suspect it won't be for long.
