Humboldt, TN

Ah, Humboldt. Strawberries and wide spots. - 4/8/2024
Humboldt is a place lots of people pass through but fewer people stop. But there are some local reasons, such as a Walmart and Autozone, as well as a few gas stations, but mostly it's just a wide spot in the road for most folks. But it is a lot wider than Trenton which is about ten miles north.Mostly it is due to the bypass which manages to take you around the town without getting close to it.Every year there is a Strawberry Festival at Humboldt, which is strange because most of the strawberries are grown at Milan. But it is a few days fun and closed roads where you can get funnel cakes and various savory treats from street vendors.

Milan, TN

Milan, not in Italy but Tennessee. - 4/8/2024
Milan is the biggest city in Gibson County and a center for the area around. It has great roads going down to Jackson and up to Martin and Kentucky plus you can go to Humboldt to the south west or Paris to the north east. There are some good stores mostly along the 4 lane which runs from downtown towards Medina and Jackson, including Walmart of course but also Lowes, Harbor Freight, Ruler Foods, Autozone, Tractor Supply and some restaurant chains as well as the China House, Maria's Mexican Grill, plus it has a hospital, a medical center, drug stores and liquor stores, and more small businesses. There is a cinema in the downtown area which is a quaint and quiet corner of the town.To the east of the city is Milan City Park which covers more than 150 acres and has walking trails, disc golf, baseball and even an outdoor swim pool which is usually open for June and July. It has an ampitheater and you can rent pavillions so it is a very popular park for all the Milan people. The reason it is so big and has so much to offer is probably due to the nearby Milan Arsenal which brought in lots of people from other parts of the country who were military members with their families. I am sure you will find stuff to do if you visit but if you feel like venture further out there is always Jackson, Paris with Kentucky Lake, and the surrounding countryside which has some pretty little parts.

Gibson, TN

Gibson County, rural and proud of it. - 4/8/2024
I've lived in the county for decades and know something about it.
It is located in West Tennessee west of Nashville, northeast of Memphis, North of Jackson and South of Paducah KY. It has several large towns or cities including Humboldt, Milan, which are both bigger and more like cities than the county seat Trenton. It has a lake, known as Gibson Lake. It does not include Reelfoot Lake which is in Lake and Obion counties about 25 miles due northwest of the county line, and it does not include Natchez Trace State Park which is about 30 miles due Southeast of the county line. But it does have a lake known as Gibson Lake and the huge Army Ammunition dump near Milan. There are lots of little creeks and such in the county but the biggest creek around is about 30 miles west and is called the Mississippi.
It has an interstate nearby (I40, about 25 miles south) and I55 about 30 miles NW just over the big river. There is talk of extending an interestate highway to run down to Memphis from Kentucky but so far it is only in pieces. It will be a major route down the east side of the big river.
Most of the industry outside of the Ammo Plant is chickens (thanks to Tyson), and farming Cotton, Corn, and Soy Beans.

Trenton, TN

Trenton, center of the place. - 4/8/2024
I am a long time resident of Trenton or in 5 miles of it, so I think I have a good knowledge.
It will strike you first of all that it has a 31 mph speed limit. Don't ask me why - rumor is that a lady resident a long time ago didn't want a normal speed limit - but it doesn't seem to matter, because the speed limit is mostly ignored and it isn't until you get outside of city limits that the TN Highway Patrol will catch your *ss for doing 70 in a 55.
Also, the kind of traffic you might encounter is what is probably regular old small town traffic. Pickup trucks, golf carts, ride on lawn mowers, are all common place vehicles on the roads in town. Don't matter that it aint legal pursay, because the local law enforcement don't seem to bother too much. Also even tho some roads are No Trucks, plenty of semis use them and never get pullled over. It's a grandplace to be, downtown, where there are beaufully kept flower planted between road and sidewalk, and lots of things to do such as looking at all the shops including lawyers, realtors, and such.
We have lots of amenities too, with a park on the edge of town that has need of attention and maintainance, and plenty of stores, including not one but two grocery stores and not a scent of Walmart within 10 miles or so.
It is a wonderful place to go, and being here just takes you back to the childhood days. Of your grampa and grandmammy.
