Gold Beach, OR

Like to know what seniors think about the communit
- 6/26/2006
On one of my vacations over ten years ago, I visited Gold Beach and found the area quite charming. After having moved from California four years ago after retirement to an small agricultural town in Northern Nevada, I think maybe it's time for another change.

The winters here seem to be getting increasingly colder. However, I understand the average rainfall for Gold Beach measures 70 inches of rain per year. Does that mean that I can expect HEAVY rain day after day for months on end in the winter, if I move to Gold Beach? I can't stand more than 2 or 3 cloudy days in a row. Does that mean I should look elsewhere to relocate?

As a single, 67 year old pensioner, I am very concerned to learn that Curry County has a dire lack of physicians and medical specialists to serve the people living there, especially the growing senior population. Although I am in relatively good health at the present moment, I am gravely concerned about having to travel a great distance out of the area (e.g., to Medford or Crescent City), when I am much older, in order to get my medical needs met.

One last thing regarding the cost of living and the Oregon state income tax--- Having to rely primarily on independently-owned stores rather than big retailers, do you find yourself paying a lot more for groceries and services than you did when you moved from the city you used to live in? Are utility costs high? And, for you seniors living on modest incomes, do you find the Oregon state tax taking a huge bite out of your savings every year? We do not pay state income tax here in Nevada, so the answer to this question is very important to me.

I'd like to thank anyone addressing any of my concerns whether you're a pensioner or not.

Why is air quality score just 50?
- 6/23/2006
Patrick, you made a comment that the air quality could be better. What is the cause of the degraded air---industry, highway 101 or what? I thought the air quality would be excellent, since the city is located near the ocean.

I now live in a rural community in Northern Nevada, where the air quality score is 60, and I'm contemplating about moving to your small community, even though I know there are not enough physicians to service the people there. After experiencing four winter seasons here in Nevada, I think I'm ready for a change. I was originally a city boy from a large metropolitan area in Northern California and got spoiled by the temperate climate in the Bay Area.

Beautiful, but disappointing
- 6/23/2006
I retired here from Northern California as a renter and thought I could buy a home in the Carson valley for under $200K, but housing is very expensive here for an agricultural community---$350,000+ for a 3 bedroom single family home. And they keep building monsterous 4 or 5 bedroom homes for $400K and above. No new, affordable smaller homes are being built here for seniors.

Also, I notice most people have 2 or 3 cars with one being a pickup or SUV equipped with 4-wheel drive on account of having to commute to work in the snow in the winter.

There seems to be no regulation requiring mufflers, as the SUV's and pickups make a lot of noise when they're operating. This is a constant problem late at night and in the early morning.

My biggest gripe are the people who drive around with their car stereos turned up so high that the walls of my townhouse actually vibrate. There's no law like you have in California against driving around with the volume turned full blast whether on the highway on in a residential area. I came to the country to enjoy peace and quiet and it's actually worse than the city where I used to live.

Not all negatives as I've described however---this is one of the most beautiful places in the world with the mountains all around you. And the air actually smells fresh (except on those days in the winter, when people stoke up the fireplace).
