North Platte, NE

Going, going, gone. - 2/2/2019
After living here over five years, here are lessons learned. 1. The "city fathers" (there are NO women in elected/leadership roles) do everything possible to stop progress, including building much-needed new housing desired by people who could fill the numerous high-paying jobs that are open. 2. It seems you can open a new business only if you come from one of three or four established/favored families. 3. Civic leaders consistently promote the city as a victim of outside forces. The villain responsible for the recent demise of three out of five department/discount stores is Amazon; there's never a mention of inferior local management of these stores. 4. Everything here is a turf-battle, an exercise in protecting your personal fiefdom. You don't tell others what you're doing/offering and then whine when you don't get community support/donations/attendance. You beg for money and then don't acknowledge contributions. 5. Almost as many tattoo parlors as there are banks; and there are TONS of banks. 6. Managers of stores and restaurants go out of there way to make customer experiences as absurd as possible. In one chain store, management approval has been required for the purchase of items as diverse as rubbing alcohol, lighter fluid, and a piece of citrus. In another chain store, damaged and returned merchandise was repackaged and resold at full price.
On the plus side, there are restaurants, movies, live theater performances, some concerts, medical and insurance services. Nice to have good Japanese, Italian, and Mexican food in town. Plenty of insurance agents, chiropractors, and banks.
