Sumter, SC

Ahh the old days - 10/11/2007
I grew up in Sumter. Had a wonderful time there.

I was a member of the first full 4 year class to graduate from then the largest high school in SC.

But, the times have changed. And seemingly, not for the best.

I cannot recall a time in Sumter where crime (violent and non-violent) is at the level it is now.

Used to be a time where my wife and I would have liked to have called Sumter home. But, I'm afraid that those days have passed by.

I went home to visit a few months ago after being gone for nearly 10, 11 years.

Not much has changed, really.

While there are many, many nice areas of town, the people - on the whole - are still nice, and the weather tolerable... the crime, low pay and lack of more "professional" jobs makes me sad to have to say that, I'm afraid I could not call Sumter home, again.

Idaho Falls, ID

Pleasant Surprise - 10/9/2007
Idaho Falls... well, my wife and I moved here some 4 years or so ago and, at first I was a little leary of what life would be like in such a conservative, quiet and small town.

While I do prefer the much large city scene, IF has proven to be a very comfortable place to call home.

The people are quite friendly, even if you are not of the LDS persuasion. No one forces his or her personal beliefs upon you. If you agree with them or not, the people of IF are almost always willing to lend a kind hand to help when needed.

Crime is, for the most part, not much of an issue. Sure, there are the petty thefts and garbage like that, but, the bigger more sinister things are lacking. Thank goodness.

IF is a great place to raise a family. The school situation may be lacking a bit, but, unfortunately, where in the US, on the whole, isn't that the situation. There are plenty of educational opportunities in IF.

The city itself is growing, quite rapidly.

Traffic, if you want to call it that, is, again, not much of an issue. 17th street can be a bit of a bear, and the construction projects may toss a curve ball here and again, but, all in all, it is what it is and what it is isn't much.

The city has a desire to become more "cosmopolitan". They have some high aims and aspirations. I, frankly, hope they meet them. And when they do, IF will be just that much better of a place to live.

Now, the time has come where my family and I may need to leave Idaho Falls.

The city with much of what you need, and if it isn't there is seems that it is on the way, and not a lot of what you don't.

As I think of my time spent in IF, I must admit, the city has indeed grown on me. I think, if the situation allows, i would move back.

I like the town. Not a bad place. Not a bad place, indeed.
