I'm a 50 something accountant that has lived in Ohio my entire life. I like to golf, bowl, play cards and I am a rabid college football and college basketball fan. My wife and I started an Education Nonprofit to help introduce children to the fascinating world of geography so we are history geeks as well...

Hamilton, OH

Hamilton Ohio - 11/5/2010
As others have said, Hamilton is a dying manufacturing town that is turning into a bedroom community. Like most other old manufacturing towns that are county seats, Hamilton has it's share of problems but it also has some things going for it. For example, Hamilton has just rebuilt most of it's old elementary schools and there are plans to build a nice new park/entertainment complex on the banks of the Great Miami River- once this complex is built, it should help to reenergize downtown. We also have alot of history in Hamilton and some very interesting architecture- few people know this, but Hamilton was the second largest manufacturing center in the US during WWII so the town has alot of neat stuff to discover if you are a history geek.

Also Hamilton's cost of living is hard to beat- we have the lowest utility costs in the State (Water, Gas and Electric) and our property taxes are way lower than they are in Hamilton County (Cincinnati). The low utility costs are a result of the city owning the electric plant and the water pumping stations (Hamilton is the second largest city in America that owns and operates it's own power plants!). Currently, Hamilton is building a new hydroelectric plant to replace it's old coal fired plant so you can even say that Hamilton is a leader in going green because the city is also looking into building a biomass electric generating plant to pair with the hydroelectic plant so we are not as backward as some people think.

Bottom line is Hamilton has a bad reputation but I think alot of our bad rep is a little overblown because the town has some nice solid neighborhoods that offer excellent value for the housing dollar.
