Numbers Skewed by Vacation Homes

This comment might have been true in 2010 but in modern day the values (especially rent) on this site are an underestimate of cost of living in Astoria. I rent a room in a house for $750 a month, and all my friends who have 1 Bedroom apartments are paying above $1k/month. This is still fairly affordable, but not as cheap as this website would have you believe

A nice place, but kind of boring - 7/29/2022
I’ve lived here for 9 months now.
First, what I like:
This place is absolutely beautiful, very close to nature, with great beaches, waterfalls, forests, and mountains in the distance. It’s also very safe, and people are friendly and approachable.
Now for the negative:
There’s just not much going on. There are a few cool bars and arcades, but never really any events. This is a heavy drinking town (as the saying goes: come to the river, don’t forget your liver). Live music is a rarity, although there are 1 or 2 small shows per month during the summer. There are just not a lot of young people here, and the dating scene is atrocious. Weather is gloomy 9-10 months out of the year.

All in all, I guess it depends what you’re looking for. If you want peace and quiet to retire or start a family, I could see this being a great place for that. But if you’re looking for fun events, lots of social opportunities, or you’re accustomed to the hustle and bustle of city life, I’d say look elsewhere.
