Bradley, ME
If you like winter -
11/5/2008I have lived in Bradley for 9 years. I moved here from a cosmopolitian city, Minneapolis, MN. Life in Bradley is very quiet. The taxes are high in Maine as are the utilities, groceries, oil and anything else that has to be trucked up here. My house is 2000 sf on 3 acres and the taxes are about $1700, not bad. I shop in Bangor, 12 miles south on 95. The University of Maine is located in Orono about 7 miles from Bradley. Fall is beautiful and a wonderful time to be outside, winter is damp, snowy and very long, (6 months). Lots of snow and slush since the temperature hovers around 30 degrees most of the winter. Summer is nice, warm days and cool nights with about two weeks of humidity, this is when the Mainers get grouchy, they can't deal with humidity. Lots of black flies and mesquitoes, unless you can afford to live on the ocean, bugs don't like the salt air. Ocean property starts around 1 million. Maine's population is a little over 1 million so we are heavily taxed. Recreational equipment, trailers, and vehicles are taxed every year in addition to paying $12.00 for a yearly inspection, even on new cars. My husband and I are retired and would like to move, but can't sell our house. Not a lot of jobs in this area. Largest employers are the University of Maine, the hospitals in Bangor and a few paper mills that keep opening and closing. If you want to escape from the world and live 20 years behind the times Bradley is the place for you.
