You are very wise to escape Albany, NY. We'll be doing the same very soon. I don't blame you for being shocked people smile because NO ONE smiles in Albany/suburbs and are generally miserable.

Yeah, it's cheap because it has to be. No one can get jobs, so they have to keep prices competitive. There are plenty of stores but you need money to buy these things. If you have an income, you can survive here.

I agree. People are very curt and crabby here. I am from DOWNSTATE and if you think NYC people are rude, you need to come up here and talk to a few people here. I think the problem is that there is a lack of jobs, too much crime here, and the rest of the people have to live on the edges of society (apart from Professors/Professional People). There are parts of Albany that look like the South Bronx. It's just not the place I want to raise a family in.

One good thing, however, are the resources for people with Autism. They are excellent.

Decent shopping very few jobs and yes it is drear - 4/2/2012
The shopping here is pretty decent both in Albany and the outlying suburbs. Yes, it is cheaper here than a lot of places but it is a haven for people who have to live off food stamps and unemployment and disability.

The people have a very curt attitude in various parts of the capital region. They smile and say nice things or talk to you but behind their words is a **** you attitude.

Too many people smoke here. It's like living in the 1970s with a really ignorant attitude.

I regret moving here and we're getting out anywhere soon.

Terrible economy. No jobs. - 4/2/2012
Unless you work for the state the only job options (possibly) are retail jobs with a huge turn over.

Crime ridden. Full of perverts. No jobs unless you work for the state government. The suburbs are okay but again it's just a place on a map. Wish we never came here for my husband's job. Now he's unemployed and we are just trying to ESCAPE anywhere else.

Too bad there aren't any jobs there. Spent 3 years UNEMPLOYED in this area despite a Masters Degree and connections. A good place if you are wealthy and bring your trust fund or a student.
