Spartanburg, SC

Great place to live - 12/5/2008
Spartanburg is a metro area of almost 300,000 people. It has over 2% of all investment from outside the U.S. It has healthcare that most cities of one million or more can only dream of. It is also a top 25 educational center in the U.S. 6 collages along with of the best public school systems anywhere. The S.C. school for the deaf and blind along with schools for the disabled such as The Charles Lea center are in the area. Cost of living is low. It sits at the crossroads of Interstates I-85 and I-26 and is serviced by 3 or 4 major railroads. Great Co`s like BMW and Milliken research are located here. As is the case with all cities we have the reg. problems. Another major problem here is the inability to annex land into the city. The city limits are where they were 60 or 70 years ago. The urban area is 10 or 15 times larger than what shows on a map. Only55% of the land in the city is taxable this limits what the downtown can do to improve it`s influence. I have lived in several different places including Germany and by far Spartanburg is where I will stay. It is a place you have to get to know instead of what you find at a glance.
