Upper Marlboro, MD

Upper Marlboro: Beautiful Historic Horse Country - 7/19/2023
Upper Marlboro is in many ways a difficult place to find. The actual town of Upper Marlboro is very small---located along Route 4 and Old Marlboro Pike---the town was the county seat of Prince George's County dating back to the 1600s. In this stretch you will find the Court House, government buildings, library, and several quaint antebellum homes that have been redone or sadly, are up for sale. Trinity Episcopal Church and the now closed Queen Anne School/Upper Marlboro Country Club served this set of landed gentry. The hunt and horse club list of blue bloods still exists, with the generations now living in the rural tier of Prince George's County, southern Anne Arundel and Calvert, as a result of white flight.

Most of what is now called Upper Marlboro is unincorporated villages and open land. They are all very different from one another, housing stock is tremendously varied, and you would need a real estate agent to break the area down by zip code to understand home values, racial make-up, and character of life. When that is done, the estimate of mean housing price here is not accurate. Most newer homes and large lot portions of Upper Marlboro are selling in the $600-800,000 range. The last home in my neighborhood sold for $1 million. The closer the portion of Upper Marlboro is to Anne Arundel County, the higher the home value. Most people living here have kids attending private schools either in Prince George's County or Anne Arundel. The Key School, Elizabeth Seton, DeMatha, and Archbishop Spalding being the most popular. IB programs at Eleanor Roosevelt (STEM magnet) and Suitland are popular public schools, as is the French Immersion public school. Annapolis is only 15-20 minutes away from this portion of Upper Marlboro and most residents shop and dine there.

It is a quiet safe area. Most residents stay for life. You would enjoy Upper Marlboro.

Quality of Life

I know the person who wrote this. I also live in rural tier. It is beautiful---near Davidsonville. Houses are all custom, nestled in forest. Small community where neighbors pretty much all know each other by sight if not by name. Can walk along Patuxent River, though not its most scenic bend. Horse country historically: a few families in the neighborhood still have them or goats. Lots of house and land for the money; smallest lot size is 2 acres, most are 5-11. Problem: being discovered and developers are encroaching. Lived here over 23 years. Great place for peace, quiet, privacy and relaxation. Problem is development encroachment.
