Hurricane, WV

quiet and peaceful - 3/14/2012
having lived all over the country since 1992, i moved to hurricane from the northern va. D.C. area to get away from the rat race. this town is exaclty what i was looking for, no traffic, no crime and no crowds. my only complaint is the lack of culture. with this being west virginia, you need to get used to biscuits and gravy, steak and potatoes, and hamburgers. dont get me wrong, i love all those things, but i do miss having the option to eat different types of food once in a while. you wont find any indian, russian, italian, afghan, south american or even tex mex around here. its tudors biscuit world and cracker barrell, not much else. (love tudors by the way). on the same hand, when i had those options, i spent 4-5 hours a day in traffic, so in my off time, i never left the house to eat since i would spend another 30 minutes in traffic to drive 5 miles to a restaraunt, then spend 2 hours waiting on a table, so there are always a plus and minus to every town. living here, i am just a couple hours away from the nicest ski resorts in the MID atlantic coast, white water rafting, fly fishing, camping and atv riding. this town is located exaclty halfway between huntington and charleston, so you have 2 options for work. employment is not great, but if your in the medical field you have plenty of choices. i work in charleston and my wife works in huntington, so hurricane is the ideal location for us. since the speed limit on I-64 is 70, everyone drives around 80. when traffic is heavy enough to make everyone drive 60, we consider that rush hour traffic. much better than stop and go for 30 miles. overall this sleepy little town is a great place for a family, our sons teachers all know us by first name and communicate with us on a regular basis, there is no crime or traffic, and like some tv shows, this town revolves around its high school football team. if you are single or dont have kids and still enjoy the party life, you wont find much action here. if your like me and spend 99% of your time either at work or at home, this place is perfect. just dont crave anything besides country style cooking.
