I will admit that Newport News has some bad areas but I have lived here for 15 years of my life as far as the racism I am African American and I have a wide variety of friends that also have a wide variety of friends. As far as this being the "ghetto" I must say as someone who has actually SEEN a REAL ghetto this is not it! I am assuming that you are ARMY because the military base in Newport News is Ft Eustis but if you happen to be navy and were assigned to the shipyard you should know that is DOWNTOWN and is the more "urban" side of Newport News. The whole city should not be judged based on that area because essentially that is the low income section 8 area.
