Detroit, MI

Detroit has passed the point of Decline - 12/31/2012
I was born and raised in Detroit. At times, I think I'd like to move back there, but I just can't risk my life to do it. It seems to have passed the point of decline and is now an example of Hell on earth. Crime drove me away and crime keeps me away.

Detroit is not just a city of buildings, it's a city of people. And, until the people stop electing corrupt politicians and seeing the thug/drug culture as source of pride (instead of a source of shame and horror), Detroit will not survive. It will continue down the path of becoming a ghost town with no one left but the criminals and the poor children born into that culture.

It is up to the people who remain to change it and to show the rest of us who would like to return to be able to do so with some sense of personal safety. This year when the police actually admitted that they are filled with fear as well as the rest of us and that any one entering Detroit did so at their own risk, was just the icing on the cake.

Clean up your politicians and your streets. Make it a safe place to live and your economy will turn around as residents return to contribute to your tax base and contribute to a future for your children. If you don't do it for any other reason, do it for the children.

re: Outside Looking In - 9/15/2012

I am one of those who think that the constant criticism of Detroit is a good thing. The more the outragous behavior and lack of respect for human life is publicized, the better chance Detroit has of turning itself around. Perhaps a sense of shame, obligation, and responsibility will make some of the people turn around. Detroit used to be a thriving city filled with beautiful architecture and a culture of industriousness - and not all related to the auto industry! Now, it's a dump filled with a thug/drug culture and no one seems to care. If you don't care for yourself, at least care for your children...this is coming from someone who was born and raised there. Detroit needs to quit giving away its soul to the criminal element and to start creating an atmosphere of love and decency. Right now, you can be young, old, rich, poor, any color and it doesn't matter...you are at risk of being a victim of crime just by being alive and breathing. This is so sad for me to say this as a native of Detroit. It's sad for the entire country. What a horrible way to make a reputation for yourself. It doesn't matter whether you are looking at statistics on crime, employment, education or anything else...Detroit epitomizes the worst of the worst.

re: Detroit sucks so hard - 9/4/2012

I have to agree with you. I was born and raised in Detroit and the lack of civilized people is what is prevalent. People just don't seem to care about anything except their immediate needs and will do anything to satisfy them. In 2008, only 24.9% of kids graduated from high school. What does that say about parents as well as the teachers? At one point in a 15 day period of time, the murder rate was 32 victims.

The people of Detroit are its greatest enemy and driving it to extinction from the inside out. Detroit is committing suicide. Pouring more money into it is not the answer. The answer lies in refusing to support a thug culture. When there is no respect for human life and a refusal to look to the future for the sake of the children and creating and preserving a decent history for them, all is lost.

Wake up Detroit! If you want to turn around the economics, start giving your city the label of the safest city in America instead of the most crime ridden city in America. I guarantee you, get rid of the drug/thug culture, then make it a place of peace and harmony and you will thrive.
