Public schools are important if you want to take advantage of the Kalamazoo Promise that grants free tuition at all public colleges in Michigan plus Kalamazoo College (a private four-year college). I believe you need to live within the city limits to qualify.

When I moved here in 1973 (from Florida) Kalamazoo was a food desert but now there are many ethnic restaurants and more choices. It is much less white-seeming than it used to be and has more educated people of color (and a more educated white population I think) than when I came. I have grown MORE pleased with Kalamazoo rather than less since 1973
