Education - Hyper test prep focused. Kids primaril -
2/18/2016Thank goodness for the charter schools cropping up all over Katy! Katy isd has an enormous problem! Hyper test prep culture. Its not a priority to actually learn to assimilate & synthesize info in an inquiry-project based manner. Katy ISD does have est. 57 schools so the culture varies per school. Starr test scores should be low on your school choice priority list. In Katy Learning gaps are commom from 1st-2nd grade and 2nd-3rd grade. And so on if you don't stay on top of the teachers. Homework is just busy work! It does show you what your child dpes not know which is alarming. Roller coaster grades are indicative of fuzzy teaching methods, lack of teacher experience, class distractions, surprise DLA, benchmark or any other test the school decides to include in each 9 week average. 60% of the material the kids are tested on they have not yet taught. The school can use these scores to inflate or deflate averages. Katy ISD makes major curriculum changes every 1 to 2 years. Kids have been pumped out not knowing how to critically think & do poorly when writing papers in college. Math is a mix mash of spiraling Singapore Math & several other methods. Kids are confused & aren't currently learning much except for how to test well. Watch Out & pay very close attention to what special programs schools have. Fielder elementary has been overpopulated with total 1000 kids in TWI Dual Language program AND Bilingual program.
One last word of advice! If public school is your only option so far & you think your child may have challenges of any kind call your schools ECI &/0r PPCD & have them evaluate your child NOW AND GET THEM HELP! Bring in outside edu evals, psych evals etc & prepare to ADVOCATE ADVOCATE ADVOCATE. These schools DO NOT want to provide children with necessary services. The school WILL DROP THE BALL & Your child will fall behind in their weak area by 6 MOS TO 2 YEARS+. Every tutoriu\ng center in Katy Texas will tell you its best for your kids to be 2 years ahead.
One last thing! If you are fortunate to have a child with little to no issues & they skate along making high As &/or Bs then beware of the shallow & wide spiral teaching with little to no inquiry based learning. Supplement with projects that require child to dig deep & develop real critical thinking & presentation skills. Mumbling, shallow boring presentation skills & Ugh Ugh are clear indication kids are not learning enough in Katy ISD.
