Luverne, AL | 1 Review(s)

I am a 62 year old woman. I enjoy the local people of my small town.I worked in the Travel business for over twenty five years My husband was severly injured and was a paraplegic and a double amputee. I had moved way from Luverne when I married him ten years prior to the accident. I had family in Luverne, Al and he wanted to move here and build a home. We did build a beautiful home on some land that was in my family. He said he wanted to build a monument to the beauty and joy that he had known in our life together. Only fifteen years and five of those he was in a wheele chair.
He passed away five years a go . Two years after them I met this really fine man from Tampa Florida. We were married on a beautiful Oct. day. We were old folks, but had an oudoor country wedding that is still the talk of the town 450 guest witnessed our marriage. He arrived rideing on our carriage and our old retired trotter Dr.His best man carried a John Wayne style shotgun. We jumped the broom, tied a rope in a knot and my cowboy son gave me away as the sun was just setting and two differnt choirs sang spurituls "His Eye is own the Sparrow" as welll as a song they had written just for us. One choir sang with no music. We had a county band and danced until I could not stand. Remenber I am an ol woman. Tents tables carriaqge house and the barn was full. We had skeet shotting. Cow patty bingo (you will have to ask me about that one) golf and fishing contest. Not too much talant, but lots of laughs and fun. After getting to know the people here my husband and I decided to open a small antique shop, then a small coffee shop. We areboth retired and still work a little bit when we don't have another project going. We fixed up some old stores down town and other people got the same idea. Down town looks a lot like it did years past.

Good Place To Retire "THE FRIENDLIEST CITY IN THE - 2/26/2008
I spend my days in the little town of Luverne, Alabama talking to careing friendly perople where there is still a sense of small town America. A good hosital and doctors who most likely grew up in the county or nearby and "came home" to practice. Our mayor knows most everyone by their first name and if their kids came home for Christmas or not. Quaint little stores down town are wakeing up again and takeing on a new life in an old time way. The Police Department is allways standing there to help no matter your needs. Sometimes they just want to know if all is fine out your way. Luverne's Fire Department sits ready to help save life, or property. They allways go the extra mile to make sure that you are"doing o.k." My recently aquired husband from out of town wanted to know if I knew everyone I met on the highway? I laughed and said you do that when you live here. Now his hand is constantly in motion. He has been here less than two years and recently opened a little coffee shop "Stimy's". First they gather at one of several other "breakfast places" From the second coffee on people come and go yelling at each other teaseing, laughing about some escapade of delight or shareing a tear when sadness does come to call. If a person has a need someone and most everyone spreads the word. Help comes and sometimes the receiver knows not from where it came.Hunting , fishing, camping and sports galore are yours to enjoy. The cost of liveing is under the national average yet there are jobs and fair wages. Good houseing at lower prices than you can find most anywhere is available. We don't have too much of a traffic problem .Local schools puplic and private with quality , careing well educated teachers make sure our children have bright futures. A small branch of a state college is waiting for those who need to stick close to home and Troy University is just twenty five minutes away. I don't know why anyone would want to live anywhere but Luverne, Alabama 36049. This is a great place to retire or raise a family.
