Pahrump, NV

Great place...maybe? - 2/8/2020
I lived Pahrump and served its Sheriff’s office for a very long time. When I moved there from California there was nothing. The only paved roads was 160 and 372. One light and no grocery store the closest one was in Las Vegas, grab ice and a big cooler for the monthly grocery’s. When McDonald’s opened wow! We hit big time! When I left there was quiet a bit of growth. Walmart Smith’s, Albertsons? And a few casinos. Home depo.
The schools and staff were pretty top of their game many of whom were recruited from North Dakota and Minnesota in the late 90’s early 2000.

There is so much to see in the wild there. Mt. Charleston has mule deer Huge Elk, wild horses, burros, sheep cut throat trout stocked in streams that can be hard to find to just to name a few. You can explore ash meadows. Devils hole, numerous hot springs, and just outside town into California I believe I remember prehistoric remains uncovered and on display. The chukar and quail are plentiful as well as morning dove. Arrowheads and primitive pottery can be found by the decreeing eye and with a little research you may find the many petroglyphs in the area.

As far as health issues yes I have to agree. I lost many friends and aquatints from brain tumors mostly and rare cancers, a number of friends lost on Hwy 160. I saw countless accidents on this stretch between Pahrump and Lv before it was widened.
I too suffered from a very rare illness that could not be explained. My oncologist at the time strait up told me MOVE AWAY! He said I won’t get better but I prob won’t get worse either. If I stay I will certainly succumb to the illness. With in a month he left with his family as well and became director of Oncology at Michigan State University. He is was a smart guy.

Fast forward years later I haven’t gotten worse, in fact I am doing well.
I made some wonderful life long friends in Pahrump and in NYE county and miss them dearly. But life has brought me to where I am today and I’m great full for my life.
One thing during my time there I noticed plant life life vegetable gardens and most trees do not grow well there. It took me years, but adjust the ph of the soil AND water. The alkaline is much to strong to grow most plants. This has also been a theory of mine when I wonder why I’ve lost so many people. Maybe it was the environment the water we drank......Some families live there for generations others can’t make it a few years. It’s just sad. But I did hall it home for many years and I have many good memories of Pahrump.
