re: Pros and Cons. Bottom line: lots to do, horrib

Atlanta does have a good job market but if you are a black woman like me, the mobility is not there. I use to go to school in Atlanta, majoring in Accounting. Didn't like it so decided to transfer back to my home, NYC. Since I transferred, I completed Bachelor's, did my Master's, received a job at one of the top public accounting firms, completed my CPA and now I've just been promoted to manager making well over six figures with a top corporation. A couple of my classmates from Atlanta who also majored in Accounting, finished their Bachelor's and the only opportunities available to them were bookkeeping positions. Six years later they didn't have the money or the drive to complete a Master's program or their CPA and they are still in the same bookkeeping positions. Cities like Atlanta drain you and make you think it's okay to be stagnant and what they call "comfortable." New York may be a tough ruthless city but it keeps me striving for more and every year the cost of living goes up, it makes me want to go out and get more for myself, while also having a good time in the city. I can't say the same for Atlanta.

I'm originally from New York City and I went to school in Atlanta for two years then transferred back to a New York university. I feel your passion for the city because it is your city but I gotta be honest, Atlanta is no where close to be a melting pot for the US. Maybe for the south but for the US, no.

Also, I've noticed the driving exam in Atlanta is much easier than in New York. People in the northeast actually go down to Atlanta to take their driving test and come back to their origin because the exam is so easy. My theory is the lanes and roads in Atlanta are so wide spread that drivers feel they have the leeway to make dangerous driving choices. Several times on I-85, I've seen drivers go from the 1st lane to the 4th, nonstop and without signalling. Don't get me wrong this happens in New York but it's not common.

As far as the rudeness goes, I agree with you. While I was in Atlanta, everyone was extremely nice and hospitable(not sure if it was genuine but they were nice). For a New Yorker like me, it became sicking and boring at a point.

Finally, the growth of the gay community in Atlanta is the only thing exciting in what would be an othewise stale city. HOORAY FOR GAYS!!

So since you've been able to afford a home there, I guess you can be labeled as the "trash." Another thing to make sure of is you don't get stuck living next to this guy. That would be torture!!

I've travelled all over the US and my advice would be, try not to get out of your car after dark in any area regardless of your skin color. That's common sense.

I LOVE NEW YORK!! - 4/11/2008
It's the capital of the world!! I wouldn't dream of living in any other US city outside of New York. The high cost of living is worth the diversity in culture and entertainment that you get. I've travelled all over the US working as an auditor, an I can tell you there is no place like home. Everyday I ride the subway and walk the streets of NY and everyday I come home with another funny story tell of a naked cowboy in the middle of Times Square, grown professionals getting into arguments in the middle of an extremely crowded train or being sexually harrassed by bums in the street. I embrace the rudeness, loudness and the brutal honesty and I've learned myself how to dish out from time to time. But no other city does everything with so much heart and soul as New York. I'll love it always.
