Corning, NY
It is what you make of it... -
11/23/2010Corning NY is a scenic town and one that I enjoy living in. I graduated from college an hour west of Corning so friends and I frequented Corning often. It is a nice place to go out on Market Street and there is a multitude of events going on in the Elmira / Corning area if one keeps an ear out for them.
The entire area is limited in major economic opportunities; Corning Inc., Dresser-Rand, Corning Museum of Glass plus the standard stores, malls, big-box stores are here. Corning is located at the base of the Finger Lakes Wine Trail which serves as a good starting point for the tourists who flock there for wine tastings at the various family-owned or incorporated wineries.
Any town will yield something depending on what you put into it; Corning is the same. If you look for opportunities, events and other things to do, you will have too much to do. If you expect those events to just show up on your doorstep, you will find yourself sitting at home with the TV looking at an empty doorstep.
The COL is very low; any decent paying job will yield disposable income which funds your activities. One must be not be dumb with their money, but one can easily save and get ahead while living here.
Corning is worth it; it is a good place to live.
