Sheridan, WY

surly women, big ole trucks

We just spent time in Sheridan and what we noticed was the owners of the shops were very friendly and helpful. One that I won't mention wasn't friendly until I started talking to her, then she warmed right up. First Lesson: Take the first step, it never disappoints. The places that weren't so friendly were where the counter helpers were in their 20's - serving coffee, pastries and sandwiches. The difference was between the 20 year olds compared to the more established crowd. Then again, we stayed at the Best Western and the 20 yr olds were fantastic. Second Lesson: Judge the person, not the town.

Love it, but had to leave it

I appreciate your honesty about Sheridan, however considering how many individuals dress, act and don't want to work a 40 hour week to afford a particular way of life, it's not the retiree's fault for having the money to move here. I was a waitress in my 20s and realized I wanted more than such a salary could provide so I went to college and worked darn hard to be where I am, so I can afford my chosen lifestyle. The cowboy identity is refreshing from the grunge and just woke up look. We all or most of us have a choice and often go through the school of hard knocks to change our attitudes and our life. If we don't we can always succeed in our own pity party, right where a lot of individuals are today, and why the country is where it is.

re:
Better be rich

We're not rich, the store owners were very helpful and friendly, never noticed any cliques. If we can't afford to purchase things, we don't blame the store owners. Our parents taught us to work a few more hours or take on a second job to buy what we wanted or needed if our 40 hour a week job wasn't enough.

Intolerant Yuppie Town

First of all I'm sorry to hear about your husband. Our thoughts are with him and you. My sister and I are Mexican, elderly and one of us with a bad knee. We found people in Sheridan couldn't have been more pleasant. Of course we're nice and respectful as our family was in the service business so we start out with a positive attitude and a smile (nothing worse than waiting on grumpy customers). We never had an issue stopping at one of the gas station in town to use the restroom. People were dressed no differently than anywhere else other than the spattering of cowboy attire which we found a welcome relief from the spandex leggings that show every bump and lump, bed hair and the grunge look. Perhaps you were overwhelmed and stressed which is understandable.
