Cost of Living and Unemployment Much Higher... -
6/30/2008The figures really need to be adjusted to truly reflect this area's economic standing. Deschutes county has 8% unemployment, and that figure I believe is low. The cost of living is outrageous, the cost of housing is a joke. They've been spinning this area for the last five years to get people who sold their California homes to move here, claiming there were tons of jobs and great weather, etc. All lies - they even hired a marketing firm - that should tell you something!
If anyone out there is looking to relocate to the area - seriously visit throughout the year - and talk to real people, not city or county officials.

6/30/2008I don't know about the bar stuff, but there is a lot of meth - there are no jobs that pay a decent wage, and thusly, employers treat their employees like garbage. Health insurance is off the charts - so most don't have it. The weather is gloomy for most of the year. There is no real industry here - except for real estate, which is at a stand still - with way overpriced houses. The city spent $90 million on a "by-pass" (starting a freeway), then hiked up everyone's property taxes to pay for more schools - when the cost of living here already is much higher than the rest of the US and the wages are a lot lower! Four years ago, people were flocking here - now they are leaving. ...and the people aren't friendly because they all moved here from California.
