Boise City, ID

re: Kiplinger Puts Boise Near the Top for 2008 Bes

I just read a report about lack of healthcare in Idaho. The report was conducted in 2007, and targets the state's healthcare system as being 44th out of 50 in the nation. I've been trying to research this because we are thinking about moving to Boise, and availability of affordable healthcare is something that is a concern to us. High insurance premiums and high medical costs make it almost impossible to get care. It has become a terrible problem across the United States but some states are doing a better job of combating it than others. I am just curious if Idaho has made any attempts to pull itself out of 44th place.

I live in Salem and want to move to Portland. Since you've been there awhile, maybe you can help provide some info for me. I am not sure which area in Portland would be the best. I know there are some places (like everywhere) that crime is high, and of course, I want to avoid those places. My income isn't that strong right now, but I'm a student so I am planning on that changing. Would you mind giving me some pointers as to where (SE, NW, etc) would be the best place for me to look? I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks!

I lived in Salt Lake for over 30 years, and one thing I know for sure, is that the LDS Church DOES control everything there. From the liquor laws to the legislation that is passed, the LDS Church influence is well-known, and always present.

We first moved there when I was in 8th grade. One of the first sentences spoken to me in school was that I was "going to hell" because I was a Catholic. The funny thing was that our family had moved from a very small (1500 pop) town in Illinois, so it’s not like we were moving from the “fast lane”. It was a very rough transition; one that I think everyone moving to SLC should be aware of before moving there. Eventually, I found a group of kids who were also non-Mormon, and made friends. We moved to California where I graduated from high school, and then my dad retired back to Utah. The 2nd time we moved to SLC wasn’t any easier. As I got older and married, I also saw my children harassed for the same reasons I was. This was harder for me to take, but at least I knew how to combat it.

As for crime, Salt Lake City's crime rate isn't low. It is higher than the national average! Education is so poor, that my kids (now grown) have had to really struggle to catch up as they have gone on to college. Utah was also found to have the highest rate of depression in the United States.

There are some very good things about living in SLC too. If you enjoy the outdoors, there is a wide variety of things to do, and places to see. If you enjoy the arts, there is the opera, the symphony and other unique events. There are sports, good dining, and concerts, shopping and fun activities. It isn’t the “fast lane” by any means, but there is enough to do to keep you from being bored.

In my opinion, it is much easier to decide whether a place is right before moving there than it is to move there and regretting it. Would I move back to SLC? Probably.

Salem, OR

Beware - 6/26/2008
We moved to Salem about 3 years ago and we will be moving this summer. There is nothing to do here and there is a terrible meth problem. I can't say it isn't pretty here because it is. The people are nice, but they aren't friendly. I would not recommend living here.
