Fort Collins, CO

re: Not a friendly place - 4/29/2009

My family has lived in town for nearly four years now, and have discovered a number of drawbacks. Some have already pointed out the lack of friendliness (or genuine friendliness) and snootiness. I don't blame the natives or long-timers, it seems to be from the large segment of those from the north. Besides CA, most seem to be from the north, and have a strange/odd way that is not personable.

Home prices continue to soar. The statistics on this page are grossly outdated. Last I heard, median prices are now officially in the upper $300K range. Realistically though, when you factor in the bidding wars, the averages are actually now in the $400k range.

Traffic continues to go up, and CO seems to have big issues when it comes to expanding the infrastructure (apparently due to stupid legislation that only CO has).

Jobs are becoming more scarce as the larger companies have fled, while more people are coming to town, leading to a nasty increase in competition. The town seems to only care about and promote small business.

There are other factors as well, but I thought I'd just hit upon the main ones.

Very accurate and well said! I do hope others pay attention to you words.

I'll try to keep this short and simple. I've lived in Houston nearly all my life, and I can't wait to move away. The town has gone downhill; especially in the last 15 years. It's basically a hot, polluted, concrete-filled wasteland teeming with third-world "charm".

But other things never change. The 'summers' are at least 6 months long (May-October), and the weather is nothing but oppressive. Either the days have high humidity, and it feels like living in a steam room, or it is drier, and you have ozone alerts. The only time you can comfortably do anything outside is from Nov. to April. The sheer size of the city is staggering, and it's very difficult and time consuming to get away from the city, and even then, there's very little away from the city that is worthwhile either, other than maybe Galveston.
