Not the Good Life for everyone -
8/4/2020Have lived in the suburbs of Omaha for 14 years, coming here strictly for family reasons.
The weather goes from too hot & humid to cold that goes to your bones. The state seems to make money solely off of property taxes that are extremely high, many times greater than the state we came from. Schools seem to be the big winners in the taxes we pay on our home. State income tax is one of the worst in the Country, taxing all forms of income, so retired folks don't get a break at all. The Legislature seems to be non-functional, unable to advocate and pass anything meaningful for the citizens. If you are a foodie or enjoy swaying cornfields, or going out with your friends, then you can find things to do.

Hot & humid and a great place for high taxes -
8/4/2020Papillion is a small suburb of Omaha and has low crime, reasonable schools, small town feel (unless you go north into the craziness of Omaha) and is growing by leaps and bounds. Everywhere you drive there are new housing developments and commercial buildings springing up.
Papillion suffers what all of Nebraska suffers: horrid weather and unbelievable tax structures. All types of retired income including a Social Security check is taxed by the state. And the property taxes are horribly high (our home is 5X higher than the taxes for same priced home in WY). Local officials seem to raise appraisal rates by double digits each year.
Summers are hot and humid, winters cold with snow staying on the ground for months, it seems. If you have money and are a foodie, than you can find things to enjoy, or if you have a group that parties together, you can find plenty of places to do that. If you enjoy heavy traffic than you will enjoy the main streets of Papillion and the Interstate highways up in Omaha. We came for family reasons 14 years ago and now are not sure if we can even afford to leave this place.
