You're not looking. There are plenty of things to do. Many are free. Are you sure you're talking about Ashland, KY?

I list 10-20 jobs a week I find on the internet & facebook and not all are minimum wage jobs. Like most places people quit advertising in the paper years ago for employees. Everyone says there is nothing to do. I'm low income & find plenty of stuff to do for free or cheap. You just need to look.

Every place has a drug problem now. You just notice it more in a small town. Plus there are so many charities really trying to help. Your older businesses are better because they understand how to treat people. But the few bad ones we have usually end up losing. But if you don't live here it's not fair to judge it by the people you allow to rent from you.

New to Ashland

I grew up here. I then lived in Louisville, Sierra Vista, Phoenix & Dallas. I'm now home again. As far as cost of living goes it can't be beat. In fact the average rent here is what I paid in a lower middle class area back in 1985. Another thing I like about it is just about any kind of entertainment you could possibly want is w/i a 20 mile radius and things needed on a day to day basis w/i 5. There is a lot of free entertainment and things to do as well. In fact Poage's Landing Days are coming up along with First Friday (monthly). We'll soon have 3 bronze Greek statues standing 30 ft. tall by the river port. I agree the local government was a huge part of Ashland being held back along with some denominational religions. But a sincere effort is now being made by organizations like Build Ashland & new blood with the city to up the ante. Yes, we do have a drug problem. It's the same one facing the nation- opiods. But we're working on this too. In my opinion we're still the best mix of small & large towns. I honestly say this, after experiencing both types my family and I chose to come home. Btw the insane speed on Rt 23 is the state's fault. It was 45 until the state came in and decided because the train tracks were so close the speed limit should be 35 mph. Even the police hate it.

Small town with big city stuff to do. - 6/23/2009
Living on the border of Huntington, WV & Ironton, Ohio and being the largest town in NE Ky. there are plenty of ways to enjoy life all within a half hour of home. There are several malls, a museum, 3 state parks besides various small parks. There's a couple of country clubs, Paramount Theatre. Am Vets, VFW, private & public swimming pools, every religion imaginable & lower prices than most places. Our movie theatres in the summer have free movies & $3. matinees. Places to eat from fast food to exotic, single meal or buffet. Gun & car shows, fairs. Summer motion is every July 4th week and in the past has had the Beach Boys,Doobie Brothers, Paul Revere & the Raiders, The Platters, etc. all for free. The list is endless.Though I have lived elsewhere I consider Ashland, Ky.'s best kept secret.
