Glencoe, IL

Glencoe is nice, but not for everyone - 6/24/2014
I grew up in Glencoe and recently moved back after I had children so I have a unique perspective. However, I have found that the things I loved (and hated) about Glencoe have not changed.

Pros: beautiful, convenient access to 94, reasonable commute to Chicago, near plenty of shopping & amenities, great school system, Glencoe Beach, Metra train access, Skokie Lagoons, Green Bay Trail, walkable community, very safe, a decent downtown area, the Glencoe Grand Prix

Cons: very materialistic/flashy/Keeping up with the Joneses, cliquey, tons of teardowns, many people are very self-involved and rude, parking can be difficult downtown, you need a permit for everything, insane property taxes

Overall, I would say the pros outweigh the cons. But I am not sure that would recommend Glencoe to others based on my experiences living here. It looks great on paper, but it's just not for me. I would encourage others to look into Wilmette if being in the New Trier district is a priority. Some other towns I would recommend: Western Springs, La Grange, Clarendon Hills, Barrington, Northbrook, Lake Bluff, Hinsdale. Those all have some similar qualities (good schools, beautiful homes and quiet tree-lined streets, Metra access, a downtown area, walkable, safe, family-friendly).
