re: People complaining about Alaska making no sens -
3/3/2013I moved from Hawaii (yes!) to Anchorage almost 30 years ago and have never regretted it! Many of my experiences in HI were very much like yours in Houston. I like to say that when I moved to Anchorage, I 'graduated' to being able to live in poverty as a single person alone, rather than living in poverty with roomates in Hawaii! lol. Life got steadily better over the years, with great job opportunities, and now I'm retired and can visit Hawaii instead! Still love and live in Alaska, and if you can stand the long, cold and very dark winters, you'll do fine! Good luck :-)

re: Cost of Living - 4/13/2008 -
3/3/2013My husband and I just bought a condo in Kona and love it (we've been visiting for over 10 years). But I have to add we could not have done this in our 'working' years. As a retired couple, yes, it works - but as a younger working couple with a family - no way. I guess it's about timing. Even with the vog, we love it (again, as retired spouses).

Alaska Wonderful Place to Live if You Can Handle W -
3/2/2013I have lived in the Anchorage area for almost 30 years and can honestly say that it has a lot to offer, and for quality of life, is hard to beat. Low population, low crime, good job opportunities and schools, reasonable real estate, and stunning landscapes all add up for making it a great place to live -with one (big) caveat - you have to be be able to cope with the long winter - approximately October through April, with very dark days from November to February. If you can deal with that, it can be a truly wonderful place to live (and I was raised in Hawaii!!)
