12/4/2009The police comment is completely ridiculous. I know numerous officers on the force and they go out of their way to be helpful. They are polite, pleasant, and firm in the face of lawbreaking. If you ran afoul of the law, it was likely for a good reason. I take offense at the "not the place for any cultured people to live". I have a Master's degree and come from a very cultured background, and would gladly choose to settle in Columbia any day, along with the many other fine people who call it home.

Great small town -
12/4/2009I actually live in the next town over, but work full-time in Columbia, and it's a really nice town. It is the walking-est city I have ever seen; people enjoy riding their bikes, walking their dogs, jogging on the sidewalks, and just generally getting around in health-conscious, environment-conscious ways, particularly downtown. For the most part, people are really friendly and accepting, and the neighborhoods are usually very picturesque and safe. Plus you have the added bonus of being very near St Louis without the big-city rushed feeling.
