Elizabethtown, PA
Small town feel with city convenience -
8/19/2007I've resided in the area my entire life. We moved just outside the town limits several years ago. We actually wished we had picked a house in town sometimes. There are some great neighborhoods only a block or two off the main streets. Most streets are quiet with little traffic. There is a college in town, but it does not suffer many of the ills of a lot of college towns with rowdiness, noise or litter (like, say, Millersville). Though struggling slightly, the downtown area is maintaining a vibrance unlike many towns in the area. It's a short drive to Harrisburg or Lancaster via major highway for serious shopping or culture. Amtrak trains stop here, and bus service is available. Prefer to live in the country? It's truly minutes away in most any direction. Other than typical PA weather (humidity), and the occasional aroma of farms, there isn't much to dislike.
Manheim, PA
Better towns to pick from in the area -
8/19/2007I grew up in Manheim, and have no desire to move back. The town is a slave to the Auto Auction, a giant gorilla of endless asphalt that pollutes every available lot in the area with off-lease cars waiting to go through recon shops. Car transporters pound endlessly over the potholed main streets rattling the windows. Snow removal in the winter is a joke. Traffic is horrible, and impossible on auction sale days. Do yourself a favor and pick Lititz, Elizabethtown, East Petersburg or any other nearby town as a better choice. If it doesn't involve the auction or high school football, it's not important in Manheim.
