A Town with 3 Separate Populations -
8/19/2006Once about 99.9% white Anglo-Saxon Protestant, Marshalltown is now a community divided in three parts. There is the majority--the white, working class people who overeat at all the fast food restaurants and weigh about 300 lbs. Then there is a handful of "professionals," unfortunately including some people who think they own the town and are extremely arrogant. Then there is the 15% of new Hispanic immigrants from Mexico, who have totally shaken up the town and changed it forever. These new residents, by the way, are the town's future. Without them, the place would dry up and shrivel away. Lots of old people here and the town needs new blood. Unfortunately, the non-Hispanics here are mean as junkyard dogs and treat Hispanics with a total lack of respect or dignity.

One mean, expensive city! -
8/19/2006After about 5 months living here, I've concluded that this is one of the most expensive, least friendly and most stressful cities in the USA. The cost of housing and just about everything else--health care, insurance, food, etc.--are about double what it costs anywhere else in the USA and the people are hateful, unhelpful, rude and unpleasant. There is a serious attitude problem here and everyone seems to be on the take or a crook. Try getting anything done or anyone to provide any kind of service. They don't show up most of the time, even after they've made a specific appointment, and they charge double when they do! Finally, the Cubans living here think they own the USA. They are arrogant, unbending and so conservative they refuse to learn English or adapt to any of the USA's customs. As a result, this city is more Latino than Latin America! In all the worst ways!
